Dayton, Ohio, is a mid-size
city located in
southwest Ohio. Dayton has the best of both worlds. It is a Midwestern
city with friendly citizens, nearby farms with grazing cattle, and over
35,000 acres of parks, nature preserves and green space. Yet, it has all
the amenities of a big-city with an abundance of cultural and social
activities. All together more than 1.5 million people live in the Dayton region, also referred to as the "Miami Valley" area. There are nearly 35 suburban communities in the Dayton area. Our teaching faculty and residents live in both Dayton and several of the surrounding communities. Commuting to and from the city from one of the suburbs is usually easy and takes just a few minutes. Another attractive aspect of Dayton is its geographic location. It is located at the center of a network of 25 interstate highways and major state routes. According to a 1998 issue of U.S. News and World Report, "Dayton can reach more metro areas by air within 90 minutes than any other city in the US and one third of the nation's markets are within a days drive. The city's great location has lured many new non-manufacturing companies, boosting jobs and income." Dayton's most-famous citizens include Wilbur and Orville Wright, where their bicycle shop still stands and their flying machines were dreamed of and built. Aviation history is rich in Dayton.
